Commentaire anglais Réalisation Janet Boston
Production Television Trust For the Environment, Londres
Initially broadcast on BBC World TV, with an audience of over 100 million viewers, «It's A Gas» has prompted many reactions. The film looks at how the latest solar, wind and domestic biogas technologies provide solutions in countries where there are no national grids such as South Africa, Nepal and Sri Lanka. But it also shows renewable energy in western countries, and more particularly in Austria where woodchips generate enough heat to power an Alpine village.

In addition to the sun, the wind and water, the earth supplies us day after day with inexhaustible quantities of energy. The deeper we penetrate the earth, the hotter it becomes. In 1986, at the instigation of the Swiss Federal Office for Energy the «Deep Heat Mining» working group was created. The aim is to reach the depth of 5000m and a temperature of 200°C with a first bare hole. Over 5000 households may be supplied thanks to this kind of environmentally friendly geothermal energy.

Moreover the Kompogas is used for Migros gas-powered trucks: this makes them much quieter and less polluting than diesel-powered vehicles.

Today, this figure only represents 2,5 million hectares, as every year, 25 million m3 of wood are destroyed, a great proportion of which is used for energy purposes. In order to curb this phenomenon while preserving the energy balance of the country, the Ivory Coast has developed a butane promotion policy. Biomass and solar energy also are promising alternatives.

This documentary presents the history of electricity and the unrest it causes as a form of the energy: it makes everything its medium. Parts of the Science Fiction drama «Master of The World» are woven in the film: the story of a megalomaniac inventor, who develops an enormous electrical combat robot, designed to kill the workers with lightnings, if they revolt against their exchange by robots. An electro chauvinist, not an electro man.
