Between 1950 and 1966, thousand of people left for the high mountains of Valais. It is there that they established a temporary civilization made of barracks standing on hillsides, like Tibetan convents. From there, in extreme conditions, they blew up the rock under the Matterhorn: they notably dug 160 km-long galleries, in order to bring water from 35 glaciers to the highest dam in the world: the «Grande Dixence». Minors and intellectuals such as writer Maurice Chappaz go through this infinite black abyss again, along which the only witnesses of their epic are still-standing abandoned vestiges.

January 26, 2001: A devastating earthquake strikes Gujarat and leaves about 20 000 people dead and over 1 000 homes destroyed. This film is neither about the quake and its tragic aftermath nor about inadequate relief and rehabilitation. It's a simple tale - the government controlling the GMDC mining company sees the quake as a God sent opportunity to acquire lignite rich villages without dealing with «messy issues» like compensation, resettlement and grazing rights. It engages in the ongoing debate -Environment vs. development.

When oil was discovered beneath the bed of the Atlantic Ocean, it was a voyage into the unknown: finding how to extract it economically and safely; very deep water; swirling currents; appalling weather; environmental concerns, etc. Then there were environmental protests against the project, as well as having to deal with the unique technical challenges of working at water depths where no human can survive. This is the story of a daring achievement bringing oil ashore safely from the Foinaven field, beneath the Atlantic Ocean, west of the Shetlands.

The Cleuson dam is situated at the bottom of the Nendaz Valley (Valais, Switzerland). The film describes the important repair work the dam underwent between 1994 and 1998 and follows the main stages of the operations. The engineer's technical rigour is shown side by side with the poetry which emerges from this mountainous area, where nature and tradition are still intact.
